Writers On Writing

On a recent trawl through the web, I chanced upon several quotes that in my opinion describes the temperament of a writer. Here they are in no particular order:

"A writer is someone who has taught his mind to misbehave." - Oscar Wilde

"If you cannot annoy somebody, there's little point in writing." - Kingsley Amis

"Writing is a way of talking without being interrupted." - Jules Renard

"You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you." - Ray Bradbury

"The good writing of any age has always been the product of someone's neurosis, and we'd have a mighty dull literature if all the writers that came along were a bunch of happy chuckleheads." - William Styron

"An author in his book must be like God in the universe, present everywhere and visible nowhere." - Gustave Flaubert

"It's not plagiarism - I'm recycling words as any good environmentally conscious writer would do." - Uniek Swain

"If you want to get rich from writing, write the sort of thing that's read by persons who move their lips when they're reading to themselves." - Don Marquis

"Publication is the auction of the mind of man." - Emily Dickinson

"All my best thoughts were stolen by the ancients." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

" If I don't write to my empty mind, I go mad." - Lord Byron

"Easy reading is damn hard writing." - Nathaniel Hawthorne

"The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say." - Anais Nin

"Words are the most powerful drug used by mankind." - Rudyard Kipling

"To gain your own voice, forget about having it heard. Become a saint of your own province and your own consciousness." - Allen Ginsberg

"Literature is an occupation where you have to keep proving your talent to those who have none." - Jules Renard

I love the quote by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Damn right it is tough to write something easy to read.
